Because we care for those paws

An app directed towards enhancing the vet experience by assisting the users, with features such as online consultation, maintaining records and medicine deliveries

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Through the design sprint, I understood how to gain understanding about the user, identifying their needs in order to come up with rational and justified solutions to be tested and iterated through user interviews. What else? How to have fun doing that!

The goal of this exercise is to get experience creating a hypothesis, gathering quick feedback to validate or invalidate the hypothesis, iterating upon feedback received and testing again.

VAGUE PROBLEM STATEMENT

Initially, before beginning the design journey I went on to define a ‘vague’ problem statement that would be redefined in the later stages.

How might we improve medical treatment for animals?
UX ROADMAP
What are the pain points and different user journeys throughout the process?

I personally never owned a pet and assumed the process was easy and does not require any input. To overcome these biases we started researching and interviewing about their vet/ medical experiences with their pets.

The interview focused on gathering key information users understand:

  • Past experiences (how they dealt with emergencies).

  • Problem faced during any past cases.

  • Process they currently follow for medical treatment of their pets.

  • Their experiences with these services.

Based on these curiosities, I interviewed 2 users with common problems, different approaches and needs. The study helped me discover insights and identify critical issues in the process.

USER RESEARCH
USER INTERVIEWS

User #1 Had three pets and faced a very difficult time keeping track of all their appointments. The documents were spread all over the place.

User#2 Face a difficult time finding a Vet in case of emergency. Sometimes medicines prescribed were also hard to find.

RE-DEFINED PROBLEM STATEMENT #1.0

Let’s redefine the problem statement based on user research!

How might we simplify the process of quick medical/ first aid treatment for animals?
PAIN POINTS

Even if the problem is small, they have to visit the vet.

Prescribed medicines are hard to find.

Hard to keep the record of previous prescriptions.

No Proper guide for first aid.

RE-DEFINED PROBLEM STATEMENT #2.0
How might we create a system to help users identify what problem their pet is suffering with and further create a stress free experience.
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

Based on a brief competitor's analysis, Vet and Pet Care came out to be the biggest competitors for the product. I focused on creating an enhanced feature set that focuses on the problem and creating a product that was market fit.

IDEATION BEYOND IMAGINATION

Based on the key insights and pain points derived from the user research, I started iterating various versions of an application with diverse features.

This helped diversify my thinking capabilities - stepping out to ideate newer - ways and taking towards solving the problem at hand. After zeroing in on the top four most interesting ideas, I began sketching to get a feel for what the project would be.

IDEATION
User testing and adding real constraints to the concept!

Post iterations, I worked towards creating an app named friendly paws! Which intended towards enhancing vet experiences. Planned as an assistance for users, the app developed from a combination of the previously mentioned features and an outcome of a series of user testing.
I used paper wireframes to conduct user testing, a few insights that came out of these 5 people user testing were:

  1. The initial design had fewer features that made the app somehow similar to the existing apps - for the next prototype I focused on increasing more features which had the potential to develop into a business in the future.

  2. The home screen lacked a search button which made it difficult for the users to look for specific articles/ reminders/ disease.

  3. The user wanted to get notification of upcoming appointments that could help them plan their schedule.

PROTOTYPING AND TESTING
Login

Post Users can easily sign in to their account with their username and password, or they can sign in directly with Google or iCloud.

Home Page

Once users have logged in, they will see a hero banner, a list of services provided by 'Friendly Paws', and an explore section. The home page provides easy navigation to all parts of the application.

  • Hero Banner: on the top section of the application users can see the offers, discounts and different information they are getting from the application.

  • Services: service section includes all the paid services that the application provides to the users.

  • Explore: users can easily find articles about first aid, hygiene and other topics related to pet care.

Search

With the search bar on the home screen, users can easily find anything in the app, from the specific services to articles about pet care.

Profile

The profile page, accessible form the home screen, displays all relevant information about the user's pet.

Reminders

The application makes it easy for the users to set reminders for their pet's appointments, both past and present.

Records

With the app, users can easily scan and store all of their pet's medical records, including prescription, tests, x-rays, and more, in one secure and convenient place.

Explore

Users can access the explore section from the home page. It will contain a lot of information about first aid, and articles about animal health.

Consultation

Video consultation is a key feature of the app, allowing users to easily book appointments with their preferred veterinarian.

Interact with the prototype!
Reflections

I learned how to take user interviews at a detailed level and further analyse them to create problem statements and formulate solutions to those problems. Getting exposure to the entire product design process instilled a thorough knowledge of each step and deeper understanding of the design thinking process.

I would change, I would want to focus more on the research - this will help me design usable and interactive user flow from end to end. Since it was a short duration sprint I could not focus on design elements such as colour palettes and typography, which I would like to do.
